Lack of sales from dept. stores aren't a good barometer for how much money the consumer has. In fact it's the opposite really. When everyone makes more money in a particular country the lower end jobs don't go away, but change from building a car to working on a movie set, or shit being a butler in a country that's well off is probably a great job!
